Kannapolis’ Colonial Williamsburg-style downtown is near the North Carolina Research Campus. The Research center is home to eight universities, including, UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, NC A & T, NC State and NC Central, as well as major corporations such as, General Mill and Dole Foods.
The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame is a famous attraction in Kannapolis. More than 20 performers have been inducted at the museum’s annual gala event since opening in 2009. The Gem Theatre is also a popular attraction. It provides rich history for the town; however, the theatre was destroyed by fire but rebuilt in 1948.The theatre offers balcony seating and is one of the oldest single screen theatre’s that is still up and running.
If you are a racing fan, you may have heard of Kannapolis before. It’s the hometown of Dale Earnhardt Sr. There is a tribute in memory of him that honors his life. The Stewart-Haas Racing headquarters is also located here, which is a NASCAR racing team that includes Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Danica Patrick and Kurt Busch.
If you are looking for sports entertainment in your backyard, Kannapolis has a minor league baseball team, the Kannapolis Intimidators, that provides entertainment throughout the spring and summer months.
Only 20 minutes south on I-85, uptown Charlotte offers professional sports, nightlife and much more. Even if you aren’t a NASCAR fan, Kannapolis and the surrounding area has plenty of other attractions to keep you entertained!
